The museum has curated more than 1,000 items for interested visitors to enjoy, ranging from the Ancient Egyptian era to well into the 19th century and giving visitors depth of insight into art history. State Premier Christine Lieberknecht highlighted the importance of the collection by explaining that “the unique Friedenstein art collections are not a nostalgic look back into the past. Rather, with their cultural impetus, they actually set a course for us for the future.”
Duke Ernst II of Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha had the Ducal Museum built immediately opposite his castle, Schloss Friedenstein, between 1864 and 1879 specifically to house his vast art collection. After extensive renovations, the museum and its new permanent exhibition are looking truly splendid. (gro)
