Thuringia boasts a much diversified industrial sector that ranges from the food to the automotive industry to high-tech industries such as biotechnology and opto-electronics. An efficient craft sector and the growing service sector are further powerful pillars of Thuringia’s economy.

For years, the processing industry have been the engine of economic growth. Its gross value added has increased by around 30% in the last ten years. The share of processing industry in the overall economic output of Thuringia is above the German national average.

Thuringian exports reached a volume of 13 billion Euros in 2021.

Vehicle components were the products from the Free State with the highest demand, followed by goods from plastics, electrical devices, measurement, control and pharmaceutical technology. Products from Thuringia were particularly in demand from customers in the USA, China, France and Austria.
